School Learning - A Short Story

"Do we learn wrong in school?", asked Hari. Hari was a student of class VIII. He lived in the village Dumurkola. It was a small village with nearly 47 families. Hari lived with his parents. His father's name was Dinanath and Rohini was his mother. Dinanath was a tractor driver and he could support his family well. His only child was Hari who read in the local High School, namely Dumurkola High School.

Hari was a good student. He always remained within first, second or third in the final examination. In class V, he was second, in VI became third and in VII he stood first. So, he was the first boy in class VIII. The teachers had special attention on him. They always encouraged him to study attentively.

Hari was the favourite student of Rambabu, the Headmaster. Everyday he would go to Hari's class to look after his education. Hari was also a very obedient student. Whatever task he was given, he did that diligently. Everyone in the village knew about Hari and so they would rebuke their children for not learning as attentively as Hari. That caused troubles to Hari. One day while going to school, Siva, Raja, Mira, Shyam and Nitish blocked Hari's path to beat him. They told him that everyday they were being rebuked at home by their parents for Hari. Even the school teachers would punish them for not being as good as Hari. Hari became very afraid, but God came to his rescue in the guise of Rambabu. At that time Rambabu was passing by and seeing Hari he lifted him on his cycle. From then Hari always kept a distance from his village children.

Life was going on like that. Suddenly fate turned against Hari. His father met with a terrible accident and had to be hospitalised. He received deep injury in his leg. The tractor owner agreed to bear the operation cost, but need of blood became a barrier. The blood group of Dinanath, Hari's father was B- (negative), a rare group. After several attempt, even from the doctors, no one with that blood group was found. When he came to know that, he offered to give his own blood, but was told by the treating doctor that he could not because his blood group was "O+" ( positive) and his father had B- (negative).

Then Hari was said, "I learnt in Science book that people with "O" blood group is universal doner and so a person with "O" blood group can give blood to anyone." Hearing that the doctor said, " It is not true." Blood group, like A, B, AB, O and "Rh" factor, like positive negative, decide donation ability. When blood group and "Rh" factor matche, then only blood can be taken.Hari got disheartened and asked "Do we learn wrong in school?"
