A Myth - A Poem

"You are very lucky.", said Sujata to Anjali. Both Sujatha and Anjali lived in the village Meherpur. From childhood they were very close. They were the two parts of the same coin. Sujata lived with her parents and a brother, while Anjali lived in the village with her grandparents, maternal uncle and aunt. Her maternal uncle did not have any child, so they took Anjali from her mother Shyamali. Anjali had a sister and two brothers. Her parents lived with them in a village called Samarganj, nearly 15 km away from Meherpur.

Anjali studied and was married from Meherpur. Before marriage Sujata and Anjali were very close. They studied in the same class and in same school till higher secondary education. On any occasion colouring of hands with mehendi was a common practice of the village-girls. So it was for Sujata and Anjali. On Saraswati Puja, Lakshmi Puja, Durga Puja, Kali Puja, any school or village programme they, like other girls, coloured their hands with mehendi. It was said that whose colour would be very deep her husband would love her very much. Every time Anjali's hands got the upper hand than Sujata in colour. Everyone used to tell her that her husband would love her a lot.

Days passed. After higher secondary education her maternal uncle fixed Anjali's marriage. She was engaged to Jatin, a grocery retailer's son. Soon the marriage was consecrated with a great pomp and glitter. Anjali went to her in-law's house. One month went smoothly, then everything changed. Jatin, a known drunkard, started his previous habit of drinking. His parents, even the villagers knew about his drinking habit. Jatin's parents thought that after marriage he would change. But alas! nothing changed. just a month's break. After drinking Jatin would become so eccentric that he started shouting. People would bring him home from the street and Anjali had to sleep lonely. That became her daily routine.

Three months later Anjali went to her uncle's house. When she met Sujata, the first thing Sujata told her was that ,"You are very lucky. Your husband will love you a lot. The colour of your mehendi tells that." Anjali could not express her sorrow feeling that that would sadden her friend and family. She just answered, "That is a myth."
