Election Benevolence - A Short Story
Election Benevolence
"He is a candidate in this election", said Rahimul. Rahimul lived in the village Karimpur. It was a fairly large village, nearly 500 families lived there. The main occupation of the villagers was agriculture. Besides a few practiced other professions, like retail-shop, politics, construction business, bakery etc. Almost all types of houses were visible there, from hut to sky-rocketing buildings.
Rahimul's family consisted of his father, his wife and two children. He had a three-room pucca house. By profession he was a teacher. He taught in the local Primary School. The environment of his village was nearly peaceful, only the local festival and election-times made it restive. Kamal, a resident was known to be a peace loving person. He was a grocery items retailer. Almost every villager had good relation with him. That benefited him a lot. All preferred to go to his store. Kamal's business grew for his behaviour.
Again, Panchayat General Election was declared. Political parties started their search for candidates. Kamal appeared to be the most preferred. It was finally decided that Kamal would contest for Naitik Party. Like previous years, election disturbed the peace of the village as most villagers were illiterate or little literate. Political candidates started their alluring practices. Jamal, a candidate of Tiger Party, distributed 10 tube-wells, 20 TVs, 50 marshals etc. He also started free tea-shop services. Kamal also got party funding. He made rice from his retail-shop totally free, started night bear tents, distributed money etc.
Villagers started telling that Kamal earned huge money which he was distributing among villagers. One day while sitting in a tea shop, Rahimul heard people were talking of Kamal's benevolence, then he said them to keep it in mind, "Kamal is a candidate in the election."
