Price Of Behaviour - A Short Story

"Where do you your parents live now", asked Makim to Srinath. Srinath was the elder son of Bhola, a village merchant. Bhola lived in the village Nitaipur. In the village he had a large grocery store. His income was decent, so his family was well-off. His wife Rekha, Lila and Mina- his two daughters, Sibal and Srinath- his to sons consisted his family. Rekha was a housewife. She was gentle and good looking as she was known. Lila and Mina were 13 years and 15 years respectively. Sibal was 11 years and Srinath was 9 years. All of the four children were students. They were reading in the nearby High School, namely Nitaipur Progressive High School. There childhood was secure in every respect.

That was the condition 10 years ago. After 10 years everything changed. Lila and Mina were married to distant dltowns and they were happy. Sibal turned 21 years and was about to be married. Affter much search Shital, a daughter of a nearby village farmer, was chosen. The marriage was held with much pump and glitter. Then the real life began for Sibal, who was a simple, down to earth person.

Sibal worked in his father's store. Before marriage his father used to give him only pocket-money. But after marriage he demanded share of the income to fulfill his wife's demand and to save for the future. That irritated his father who started misbehaving with him. In the house Rekha started torturing Sibal's wife Shital. She stopped working and put the whole work-load on Shital who did not work at her paternal house and was just married. After household work, Shital used to get too tired. Her health broke down. Even his brother Srinath heard taunts at Shital. All those behaviour surprised Sibal and also gave him much pain.

One day Sibal discussed with his wife Shital how to handle all those behaviour. It came out that either they would have to be inhuman like the family members or they would have to leave the house. They preferred the second option. So, Sibal and Shital the next day left the house and none resisted them.

Five years passed. Srinath was married. Sibal and Shital were not invited. Bhola and Rekha became aged. Srinath was running the business. Bhola stayed at home, but Rekha had to work. Srinath's wife Mila did not do any work. When Rekha, his mother, told Srinath to ask his wife to do household work, he got angry with her. He bluntly told his mother that Mila was a mere child and so she would not work. On the other, Rekha's health did not permit her to do any work.

One day, Rekha was sleeping in bed, not cooking any food. At noon coming home from the shop, when Srinath came to know that his wife was hungry as his mother did not cook anything, he rebuked his mother severely and turned his parents out of house. They got shelter in a friend's house. That friend felt sorry for Sibal when they left home, but he kept contact with Sibal. Sibal then acquired a large store in a distant town, called Nipas Nagar and had a daughter. On learning his parents' helpless condition, Sibal took them to his own house where his parents stayed since then.

After two years Makim, Bhola's friend heard that Bhola was turned out of his house. He asked Srinath when he meet him in the market, "Where do your parents live now?
